Tesla’s Powerwall 2 is set to be Discontinued, But the Powerwall 3 Is Here to Stay as the Latest Battery Storage Solution

Tesla has been a pioneer in the world of energy storage, particularly in the residential sector, with its highly popular Powerwall series. Tesla recently reached a milestone of more than 750,000 Powerwalls installed worldwide. We met with our Tesla Account Manager last week who confirmed that the Powerwall 2 will be phased out by January meaning that there will be limited stock as we get closer to the end of the year. However, in this evolving landscape, Tesla is ready to continue leading the charge with its latest generation of energy storage technology – the Powerwall 3.

The Powerwall 3 was launched in the UK in August 2024, with the first installations happening in September. SunGift Solar was among the first companies in the UK to install the Powerwall 3, and our installation numbers keep growing!

The End of the Road for Powerwall 2

For several years, the Tesla Powerwall 2 was the foundation of home battery storage. Launched in 2016, the Powerwall 2 made it possible for homeowners to store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it during the night or during outages. With its sleek design and solid performance, the Powerwall 2 quickly became a popular choice for those looking to increase energy independence and lower their energy bills.

Despite its success, the Powerwall 2 will be phased out as Tesla looks toward the future with its more advanced offering, the Powerwall 3. The discontinuation of the Powerwall 2 isn’t a sudden shift rather, it’s a natural progression as technology improves. As Tesla strives to enhance the efficiency, capacity, and usability of its home energy systems, the Powerwall 3 has emerged as the next step forward in their energy storage journey.

Powerwall 3: The Next-Gen Energy Storage

Tesla’s Powerwall 3 is the latest and most advanced version of the Powerwall series. This new generation brings with it a host of improvements over the older model Powerwall 2, making it a more attractive option for homeowners interested in the latest tech and whilst improving their energy independence from the grid.

Key Improvements in Powerwall 3:

  1. Increased Storage Capacity: The Powerwall 3 boasts a higher storage capacity than the Powerwall 2. With a capacity of 14.4 kWh, the Powerwall 3 can store more energy, allowing homeowners to power their homes for longer periods. This increased capacity is particularly beneficial for those in areas with frequent outages or high energy consumption needs.
  2. Higher Power Output: The Tesla Powerwall 3 boosts energy independence from the grid by delivering a higher power output of 11.04 kW. This increased capacity enables a single Powerwall 3 to power high-demand appliances like EV chargers, electric showers, and heat pumps directly from stored energy.
  3. Improved Efficiency: The Powerwall 3 comes with enhanced efficiency ratings, meaning that more of the energy you store in the Powerwall will be usable. Tesla has optimised the system to reduce energy losses during charging and discharging, making the Powerwall 3 even more cost-effective over time.
  4. Compact Design: While the Powerwall 2 had a relatively compact and sleek design, the Powerwall 3 is even more space-efficient, offering better integration with your home.
  5. Advanced Software Integration: Tesla has made significant improvements to the software that powers the Powerwall 3, including better integration with the Tesla app. This allows homeowners to track energy usage, monitor battery health, and optimise energy management with greater ease.

What Does This Mean for Powerwall 2 Owners?

For current Powerwall 2 owners, the discontinuation of that model does not make their system outdated. Tesla will maintain support, warranty coverage, and regular maintenance for existing Powerwall 2 units. In addition, Powerwall 2 owners will still benefit from Tesla’s ongoing software updates, which enhance performance and energy efficiency.

However, if you are thinking of expanding your current system to an additional Powerwall 2, now would be the time to act upon this.
