As we celebrate International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to honouring the achievements and contributions of women worldwide, it’s crucial to shine a spotlight on what many people still think are ‘unconventional career paths’ for women. The electrical industry in the UK has historically been male-dominated, but that is gradually changing. Women are playing a more substantial role and making noteworthy contributions to the field. A recent Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) report indicates that women now constitute 1% of the electrical workforce in the UK. Although this percentage may seem modest, it signifies a noteworthy growth compared to just a few years ago.

There are several known factors that contribute to the underrepresentation of women in the electrical industry, such as:

  1. Limited awareness of career opportunities: A significant number of women are unaware that a career in electrical work is an option for them.
  2. Gender stereotypes: Electrical work is frequently perceived as a traditionally male-dominated profession, potentially discouraging women from considering it as a career.
  3. Insufficient role models: The lack of women in senior positions within the electrical industry makes it challenging for other women to envision themselves as successful electricians.

Here at SunGift Solar, we are celebrating International Women’s Day by recognising and appreciating the women who are not only challenging norms but also electrifying the future in fields where they’ve historically been underrepresented. Meet Megan one of our apprentice electricians who is dedicated to mastering electrical systems.
